I am a self-employed Yorkshire-based Genealogist, researching family history across the UK and producing high quality keepsakes designed to be the gift your loved one will never forget. Family Trees by Hannah began in October 2017 when I decided to take the plunge and turn my lifelong hobby into a career. I do the research on behalf on my customers but my focus is different to most other Genies - I try to bring the stories to life by offering books with many pages not just of original records but maps and photographs and lots of information about the things we really want to know - What were our ancestors jobs really like? What would their houses have been like? What did they wear, eat, do for fun? I focus on my products being as personalised as possible with the books written in second person narrative (Your great great grandma would have worn something like this...etc) and lots of opportunity for the family to include their own photos, and personalised messages. You may be familiar with the BBC programmes 'The 1900 House' and more recently, 'Victorian Bakers' where homes and workplaces are converted to look and function as they were back then, with the stars of the show having an opportunity to wear the clothes and truly step into that world. My goal is to create an experience as close as possible to that on the written page. The response so far has been overwhelming, all my customers say how overwhelmed they are with most of them being moved to tears (of happiness, that is!). I made back my setup costs within the first month of business and up until last month, all my customers have been people who've heard about me through word of mouth. I've made a full-time living which is unusual for a Genealogist, most have businesses as a sideline and I've researched families all over England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia the USA. I'm looking to expand by finding advertising opportunities that'll reach the right audiences and hopefully look to employ a second person in 2020. I work in line with the British Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) which are the guidelines followed by The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA) which is the professional organisation that promotes high professional standards in the field. I began researching when I was 14 and I'm now 32 so I have more than 15 years experience.
