The Margaret Carey Foundation is a small registered charity (no. 1136858), based in Bradford, which delivers bike maintenance workshops and one wheelchair maintenance workshop in 10 prisons and the community across the North of England and Nottingham. The charity rescues scrapped bicycles and wheelchairs that are no longer in use and set up workshops where prisoners clean, adjust and repair them to a high standard. Once refurbished, a proportion of the bikes and wheelchairs are distributed to communities in need, in the UK and in developing countries with a proportion being sold to raise funds for the charity.
Current projects delivered by the Margaret Carey Foundation: bicycle workshops in HMP Liverpool, HMP Haverigg, HMP Kirkham, HMP Humberside, HMP Northumberland, HMP Lindholme, HMP Nottingham and Buckley Hall. A bike and wheelchair workshop in HMP Garth and an electrical mobility aid project at HMP Kirklevington Grange. A Community bike hub, ‘The Bikery’ in Bradford and a shop and training venue in Shipley town centre.
